RenewableUK is the new name for the British Wind Energy Association, the leading renewable energy business association in Britain.
BWEA was founded over 30 years ago as a forum for academic debate and discussion over the development of an exciting new energy technology. By the 1990´s as the first commercial projects were built full time staff were employed and over the years we have grown into a professional trade association with over 30 staff for what is now a multi-billion pound industry.
The association´s growth reflects the wider growth of our sector, from academics mapping out the possibilities of the science in the 1970´s & 80s, to independent entrepreneurs building the first projects in the 1990´s, to multi-national energy companies funding vast offshore arrays today.
But our members interests now go well beyond wind power alone. Just over 5 years ago our remit expanded to cover marine technologies and today we represent over 550 corporate members in the wind, wave and tidal energy sectors. Our mission is to champion the deployment, generation, and use of renewable power.
Our new name chosen by our members after a year of extensive consultation better reflects the new central importance of our sector to the UK´s energy mix and the wider economy. RenewableUK will be a voice for all renewable, responding to the needs and concerns of our members and making the case for a green revolution in the way we use and produce our energy supply.
