RenewableUK 2011 event summary
Thanks to all those that attended RenewableUK 2011 and helped make it such a great success.
A record number of people attended Britain’s premier renewable energy event, RenewableUK 2011, in Manchester at the end of October. Just over 5,800 people came to the wind and marine energy trade association’s 33rd annual conference and exhibition at the MCCC (Manchester Central Convention Complex). Three hundred companies exhibited, providing an unprecedented opportunity for manufacturers, developers, suppliers, financiers and research institutes to find out about the latest developments in the sector.
RenewableUK extended the exhibition into an extra hall to accommodate the demand for more space. There were two new technology pavilions - one for Small Wind Systems, and the other for Wave & Tidal Energy.
In his keynote speech, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, heralded the leading role of renewable energy in what he described as “the Third Industrial Revolution”, highlighting the sector’s massive potential
for job creation over the next decade. In his emphatic defence of renewables, Mr Huhne criticised what he described as “the green economy deniers…the curmudgeons and faultfinders who hold forth on the impossibility of renewables" describing them as "an unholy alliance of short-termists, armchair engineers, climate sceptics and vested interests who are selling the UK economy short". His speech was strongly applauded by hundreds of delegates who packed out the hall to full capacity to hear him.
Among the many other highlights was a keynote speech from RenewableUK 2011’s core sponsor, Siemens. The Managing Director of Siemens Energy Sector UK, Matthew Chinn, emphasised the importance of the industry taking steps to drive down generation costs, particularly for offshore wind.
In one of the most eagerly-awaited sessions, chaired by RenewableUK’s Director of Policy Gordon Edge, a number of leading industry figures examined the impact of the proposals set out in the Government’s Energy White Paper – the most radical reform of the electricity market for decades. The industry is calling for more clarity about how EMR will work in practice.
On the final day, the exhibition and Careers Fair was opened to the public free of charge. This included free sessions for anyone interested in a career in the renewable energy sector, as well as information about installing a wind turbine, and explanations of the benefits of wind energy.
