RenewableUK Offshore Wind 2011

The UK is the world leader in offshore wind with more projects installed, in planning and in construction than any other country in the world.

Just under 2,500 people attended RenewableUK's tenth annual and largest offshore wind conference and exhibition. Delegates included senior government officials, investors, financiers, manufacturers, developers and all others with an interest in the latest developments in offshore wind energy.

Over 75 high quality speakers covered a range of important industry topics.

EMR, the Renewables Road Map and Costs were at the forefront of everyone's minds, with the industry calling on the Government to deliver an updated 2020 target and favourable policy support landscape. Costs, clearly under the spotlight since the CCC report, were given a more positive outlook with BVG launching a report commissioned for RenewableUK showing that costs could come down by at least 30% by 2020, with offshore wind offering the potential to add £60billion in GVA to the UK economy.

A number of technical sessions highlighted how the industry is moving forward and learning lessons with many positive accounts of projects being delivered into the water now, although cabling remains a major concern. Looking forward and a number of innovative and exciting developments were discussed which point towards a more confident, mature industry ready to tackle the challenging conditions ahead. New entrants to the UK also made their mark with Areva offering a strong presence.

The 2012 Global Offshore Conference in London next year, launched on the 2nd day by ABB, promises to be even better, and will ensure that the UK, already the world leader in offshore wind, is the focus for the growth of the global offshore wind industry.
