RenewableUK Wave & Tidal 2011

Over 450 government and industry professionals attended and 42 companies exhibited at the eighth annual RenewableUK wave and tidal event, held at the QEII Centre, Westminster, London.

Delegates included senior government officials, investors, financiers, manufacturers, developers and others with an interest in the latest developments in wave and tidal energy in UK waters.

The conference saw an open and honest discussion about the up front cost of technology and a clear need for a replacement of the Marine Renewables Deployment Fund. For the first time the conference took a twin track approach, discussing both technical aspects on technology development, resource assessment and O&M, whilst also focusing on big ticket items such as UK and EU policy, industrialisation, risk analysis and cost reduction.

The final session included representatives from Government and the industry discussing how the sector could move forward and cement an already established lead within the UK. It was not just the conference sessions which were busy though. An exhibition boasting some 42 stands allowed companies to highlight their technical expertise and discuss how best they may collaborate in the future.

To kick the day off the Minister for Energy & Climate Change hosted a business breakfast with key industry figures and RenewableUK presented the SeaPower campaign fund paper. Along with the RenewableUK 2011 state of the industry report, the SeaPower campaign was also the focus of attention at an hour long press conference which was attended by George Eustice MP. An open letter to DECC and HMT, supporting the campaign, was signed by no less than 10 MPs that made the short trip to the QEII Centre to gain further insight to the stage of development which the industry has reached.

The eve of conference reception was timed to coincide with the climax of the SeaPower campaign, which is calling on the Government not to cut capital support to the burgeoning marine energy industry. The well-known indie band British Sea Power are supporting the campaign, and played a gig on the Thames outside the Houses of Parliament, attended by 250 industry representatives, the media and a few lucky winners of an EmbraceMyPlanet competition. Guest speaker on the night was Peter Ainsworth MP.
