16.00 The Marine Action Plan - What impact will this have brought to the UK wave and tidal industry by 2015?
A Panel Debate chaired by Stephen Sackur, journalist and presenter
The Marine Action Plan is a industry government group.  The Action Plan will aim to set out the main challenges which need to be addressed in taking wave and tidal technologies through to mainstream deployment in the coming decade, out to 2030, and the actions which would need to be taken by both Government and the private sector to make this a reality.  The mantra for this work is to be “a realistic, practical and pragmatic document which both the Government and the private sector can sign up to”. It is hoped that the Marine Action Plan will set out an aspirational but realistic vision, against which progress can be benchmarked and which will act as a spur for the sector. This session will see panel debate from the chairs of the four Marie Action Plan groups along with a leading technology developer.  The focus for discussion will be the impact that the Marine Action Plan will bring the UK marine renewables industry.  Key themes for the debate will be:
  • The role out for Marine Renewables over the next 20 years
  • The UK funding landscape and potential requirements
  • Does the UK have the infrastructure for delivery?
  • What can be done to reduce the cost of environmental monitoring the initial projects?
  • Will the UK maintain its current position as world leaders of the Wave & Tidal industry?
Panelists
  • Henry Jeffery, Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Energy Systems, University of Edinburgh and Chair of Marine Action Plan Technology Road Map Group
  • Neil Kermode, Managing Director, The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Limited, Orkney and Chair of the Marine Action Plan Infrastructure Group
